Hospital Highlights

Khyber Teaching Hospital (KTH) is university hospital of Khyber Medical College. Located next to the college, KTH is one of the largest hospitals of the country. In spite of being a teaching hospital and a tertiary health care facility, it is serving a very large population of the province. The more than 500-bedded hospital has most of the major and minor medical and surgical specialties.

Established basically for the medical students of KMC, KTH is now a major health care facility of the country. Medical students start their clinical training in the hospital in their third academic year. After graduating they are selected to go to any of the three affiliates of the college, the Khyber Teaching Hospital, the Lady Reading Hospital in Peshawar or the Hayat-Abad Medical Complex in Peshawar. Selection is purely on merit and the performance of the students in the college.

The hospital also has a College of Nursing.

Organizational Setup

KTH is a government hospital and the administrative staff and the doctors are government employees.

An Administrator who at present is Professor Mohammad Zahir Shah heads it.

Each major specialty is divided into several units with 50 beds per unit. A professor heads each unit. Other consultants in a unit are an associate professor and an assistant professor. Each unit has some Trainee Medical Officers (TMOs) who are being trained for fellowships. Also each unit has several House Officers (HOs) or Interns who are usually graduates of Khyber Medical College.
