About Peshawar
Peshawar derives its name from a Sanskrit word "Pushpapura" meaning the city of flowers. Peshawar is the capital of North-West Frontier Province (NWFP), near the entrance to the famous Khyber Pass at the border between Pakistan and Afghanistan. In the past the city was a target for the invaders of the Indian subcontinent because of its strategic location near the pass. In the early 19th century the city came under the control of Sikhs, and in 1849 it was captured by the British. It has been the capital of NWFP since independence of Pakistan from British rule in 1947. Population of Peshawar is 566,248 (1981).
Peshawar is the land of Pathans who are faithful muslims. Their typical martial and religious character has been molded by their heroes, like Khushal Khan Khattak, the warrior-poet and Rehman Baba a preacher and also a poet of Pushto language.
Rice, sugar-cane and tobacco are the rich cash-crops of the well-watered Peshawar valley through which flows the Kabul River and at the end of which the mighty Indus River forms the district boundary for 48.5 kms (30 miles), the two joining near the historic Attack Fort. Industries include handicrafts and the manufacture of processed food, footwear, silk, and cotton textiles.
Peshawaries have a great taste for food. Favorite dishes include the Chappli Kabab, Seekh Kabab and Karahi Tikka.
